“I Feel Stuck in My Job" — And Also on the Interstate, Behind Two Minivans Doing 55

Let me guess—you’ve recently Googled: “I feel stuck in my job.”

And now here you are, hoping this blog will magically offer you the secret route out of Career Gridlock and straight into your dream job with the corner office and the well-behaved coworkers who refill the coffee pot. (Spoiler: They don’t exist. That’s a myth like inbox zero or a productive meeting that could’ve been an email.)

But I get it. I’ve been there. And oddly enough, the epiphany came to me one morning while driving to work.

Picture this: I’m on the interstate, coffee in hand, trying to get to the office. I’ve got one lane-blocker on the left going 57 mph like it’s a Sunday afternoon scenic drive, and another on the right doing an equally leisurely 56.5. No openings. No wiggle room. Just me, boxed in, inching forward with a growing sense of anxiety and a few choice words for both drivers. (None of which I will repeat here because—professionalism.)

And in that moment, I felt it.

Not just road rage—though yes, that too.

I felt stuck. Trapped.

And not just in traffic—but in my career, my life, my schedule, my inbox, my color-coded Google calendar that looked more like a patchwork quilt than a life plan.

Why am I not moving forward?

Why can’t I get past this?

Is this all there is?

Sound familiar?

Now, I could’ve chosen to stew in frustration, gripping the wheel with white-knuckled corporate angst. But instead, I made a choice—a radical one, really.

I relaxed.

I surrendered.

I accepted that this—right here, behind the world’s slowest carpool convoy—was where I was for now.

And then something happened.

I remembered that just a mile ahead, another interstate merged into mine. The road would soon open up to four lanes. Space. Options. Breathing room.

I’d forgotten what was coming, because I was too busy resisting what currently was.

Isn’t that exactly how it feels when you’re stuck in your job?

You can’t always see the next opportunity. You might not know there’s a “career interstate expansion” coming just around the corner. But when you stop fighting where you are—when you stop resisting your current season—you create space for the new path to reveal itself.

Sometimes, when you feel stuck in your job, it’s not because there’s no way forward. It’s because you’re trying to force progress when the road hasn’t opened yet. And ironically, the more force you apply, the more stuck you feel.

Corporate life loves to sell us on hustle. “Push through. Get ahead. Move faster. Stay busy.”

But here’s your permission slip to do the opposite:

Slow down. Be present.

Because the opportunity might already be here—just in a slightly different form than you expected.

It might not be the dream promotion right now.

It might be a side project that lights you up.

It might be a new skill, a different team, or a mindset shift that turns your dead-end into a detour toward something better.

So next time you’re stuck in traffic—or at your desk, questioning your entire LinkedIn existence—remember:

You’re not actually stuck.

You’re just in a moment.

A moment that’s about to change.

And when it does?

Four lanes, baby.

Full speed ahead.
